CARE TIPS

‘Cats’ flowerpower
                - no problem!

How much water do ‘Cats’ pansies need?
‘Cats’ pansies do not require any more water than other pansies.
You will keep them happy by keeping them moist but not too wet.

What is optimum feeding?
In spring and fall, feed the plants once weekly using an industrial multiple fertilizer concentrated at 0.1% = 1g/1 liter (0.0352 fluid ounces per 1.0567 quarts) of water. Alternatively, spread a 12-12-17-2 Blaukorn fertilizer in September/October and again in March/April using 4-5 kg (8-10 lbs.) per 100 square meters (1000 square feet). No feeding is required during winter.

Do ‘Cats’ require any deadheading?
Removing dead flower heads is just a matter of cosmetics.
Deadheading has hardly any effect on plant growth.

How do I protect ‘Cats’ from disease?
Like many other bedding plants, ‘Cats’ may be infested with mildew or leaf blotch and attacked by slugs or snails. To control these pests and diseases, use well-known products available from specialised dealers and apply them according to the instructions printed on the package.

How do I protect ‘Cats’ against late frosts in spring?
Being biennial, pansies are frost-tolerant and will survive temperatures below frost without any problem provided the plants are covered by snow.
If there is no snow cover to protect the plants in severely cold periods (-10°C/14°F or below), cover the plants with a non-woven fleece (17-40g/square meter / 0.06-0.14oz/square ft). Also cover ‘Cats’ during periods of combined wind and severe frost, as this combination also poses a threat to the plants.

What do I have to especially watch out for in the fall?
Make sure the plants have rooted well before the cold period begins. Optimum hardiness can be assumed when the plants have been grown in the container, window box or flower bed for at least 3-4 weeks.

Is there a second life for my ‘Cats’ pansies?
There is indeed, because pansies are biennial plants with good frost tolerance. They flower both in fall and in spring. Protecting them against “Siberian” (dry and very cold) weather conditions will ensure that you can enjoy their unflagging willingness to produce flowers for two years.
